The ambassador

We're officially in the toddler universe right now, and it's a confusing and downright strange place sometimes. (Why, for instance, did Luke need to get up from dinner three separate times to confirm that Dave's shoes were tied?). I think Harvey Karp is right that sometimes you have to look at yourself as an ambassador to this little proto-caveman world.

For instance - I think Dave probably said it better today already but - for the record - Luke's big accomplishment today was going down for a nap at school. On Thursday he had been a little skeptical about the idea of sleeping there ("Where are the beds?"). But Dave thought to mention that question to Teacher Beverly this morning, and she had the brilliant idea that it might help him if he saw her preparing the beds before naptime. So when nap time rolled around, she had him help her pull out the cot and put his sheet on it. Apparently he fell asleep within minutes of putting his head down. Teacher Beverly = My new favorite person.

We also have to realize we're dealing with a master politician. While working at his workshop he handed me a giant toy nail: "Here's special surprise, Mommy!" and I was obviously delighted. So, seeking to use this to his advantage, he sprinted over to the door of the garage (basement) and said, "Mommy, see special surprise in basement!" Of course the only special surprise in the basement is Dave's tools, which is not so much a "surprise" for me as it is "special" for Luke.

But the good thing is, he's becoming quite creative at serving as his own interpreter. Tonight he held up a jagged block and said, "Chain chack," and we were both like, "Chain what?" ("Chainsaw?" Dave suggested helpfully). Luke shook his head patiently. "No. Chain. Chooka-chooka-choo-choo!" Ahhh. Train track - of course! Now can you explain the thing about the shoelaces?
